About a description of Silat Buluh Tua:
It is a Silek Tuo (Old Silat) system from Bukittinggi West Sumatra Indonesia. This Silat purposely are for elderly and women where they do not have much power and stamina when fighting enemy. Therefore, all its movements are designed to finish the fight as quick and as efficient as possible with the fight always finish on the ground. This silat was developed with the mentality of fighting with multiple attacker thus we emphasise strongly in training the footwork and gelek (coiling movement). Our family Silat is called Buluh Tua (or Old Bamboo) because it has the characteristics of old bamboo (strong yet flexible). My father said once, people can break concrete, ice blocks, woods, steel, etc but no one has ever succeed in breaking an old bamboo (diameter 3,5 inch). Moreover, Old bamboo is very close to Minangkabau (West Sumatran people) culture, where it is use for almost everything (from cooking, building materials, food, weapons, circumcision tool, water gatherer, etc). Thus using the philosophy of Old Bamboo, one who learn this Silat must be useful and kind toward other people. Silat Buluh Tua is divided into two positions: ground position or we call it Harimau (Tiger) and upward position. We learn harimau position in the beginning of our training to develop strong lower body condition until one is able to move swiftly and deftly on the ground. After that we learn the upward position and emphasised on the Tagak (stance) and Langkah (footwork). Tagak is the alphabet of Langkah, when we have good tagak then our langkah will be good also. After learning about langkah, then we go on learning about Gelek, Kicks, Punches, Locks, weaponry and sensitivity training. Sensitive training is a very difficult aspect of this Silat because it involved deeply learning about Tenaga Dalam (inner power/Chi) and metaphysical aspects of it.
